We chose Dell Quay for a walk this morning as it would be easy to avoid people, that is if they were there, which wasn’t the case. However, on returning we saw in the paper that the Chief Medical Officer has now clarified the position regarding the one exercise we’re permitted a day. From now on we cannot drive anywhere to take our exercise; this makes much of the harbour, which is relatively empty, inaccessible. Instead, we’re encouraged to go out on the busy streets of Chichester where it’s much more difficult to keep a social distance.

On the Salterns Way the birdsong was as bright and varied as ever, the sunshine had really made them all
active. At one point just beyond this tree we saw three skylarks at the same time, one flying up out of the rough ground, with several more further on. “Silver chain of sound” is a very appropriate description!

The Sparrows were being very social in the Blackthorn hedge, all sitting together but not particularly vocal. Very different in Salterns Copse were we could clearly hear Robin, Dunnock and Tits all competing with each other to get their voice heard and, presumably, establish their territory.

Particularly noticeable now are the Bumble bees, all very active in the warm sunshine gathering pollen from the increasing number of flowers about.

Also in the copse we saw the first Bluebell of the season, the one we’d seen earlier that was now in flower. There will be a wonderful display here later on but we’ll have quite a walk to get there and enjoy them next time.
