The Countryside and Wildlife Around Chichester is Amazing...

We’re spoilt for choice with the South Downs National park nudging the northern boundary of Chichester and the Harbour, an area of outstanding natural beauty (and a SSSI), a short walk away to the south.

We try to take advantage of it by going walking most days. The harbour is especially interesting in the winter with so many wildfowl and waders. In the Summer the flowers and butterflies on the Downs are not to be missed

On this page, you can browse through our notes of a year’s walking around Chichester.  You can also find details of our favorite rambles in the area, we hope you find them as enjoyable as we have.

By going out just about every day we’ve been able to experience the many moods of the harbour in all weathers. Early in the morning, when we tend to go, the light is softer, changing rapidly as the sun rises.

We’ve become much more familier with the state of tide which changes the feel of the harbour every morning. It has a dramatic effect, one day the water is right across the harbour, like a mirror, a week later it’s limited to a small channel between acres of mudbanks.

It’s enough to make you want get the paintbox out and capture these moods, one day I may be able to do them justice.

During 2020 we made a record of what we saw on our walks. It’s interesting to see how the countryside changed throughout the year when the wildlife and flowers appeared. It’s pleasing to skim through these posts if you can’t get out to see the harbour or the Downs in person; it brings back many happy memories.
