It’s Sunday and the last day of the half term holiday; yet again the forecast is for wet and windy weather. This didn’t stop lots of families going down to West Wittering to see some rough seas; they were not disappointed with some waves braking right over the sandbank and drenching those in the car
park!

It was just on high water and a 4.6 metre tide at that so there was little beach to walk on. Unfortunately as the sea was very agitated there were lots of large bits of foam flying around like snow. I assumed that some pollution was the fundamental cause, not a good sign.

Being such a high tide the way it had eroded the sand dunes was very clear as the breakers were right up to the edge and the beach almost impassable. There were plenty of notices asking people to keep out of the dunes, especially the roped off areas to try and limit the amount of erosion to the marram grass. However many ignored them and scampered up the dunes with their dogs, fortunately the nesting season hadn’t
started.

The bay on the east side of the headland was enormous, a huge expanse of water with hardly any of the salt marsh exposed. Hardly any wildlife either with the exception of 80-100 Dunlin on a small patch of weed just offshore. Occasionally they’d lift off, fly around to give a display of their aerobatics and return as before.

So good to see so many people out enjoying the weather, even better they didn’t all go to the new cafe where we could have a hot chocolate in comfort beside the log burner.
